About Us

Early pioneers of the wine industry in the South West of Western Australia, the Mountford family selected Pemberton with its high winter rainfall for the unique flavour potential possible from this cooler and largely forested region.

Trained horticulturist Andrew Mountford was looking for a region as yet undiscovered in Australia and chose the site of the vineyard based upon the combination of soil, climate, topography and of course most importantly the right feel.

Eighty acres of undulating country gave all the variables needed for this dream and a fifteen acre vineyard was planted.

Obvious cool climate conditions, amongst the coolest in Western Australia were suitable for Andrew and Sue Mountford's passion for the classic early ripening varieties; Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot. In this regions short history these varieties have proven more than any other to be the correct selection.

Established in 1987 and now one of the regions oldest vineyards, these vines are producing fruit with true intensity and complexity. This is due to careful organic vineyard practice since inception and continual sound environmental care. These practices have enabled expression from vineyard to bottle ensuring all the wines retain their essence of place.

Label Design

The stoneware ewer used on the Wine labels is a family heirloom that is dated back to 1850, the mid Victorian period. It is made from a variety of clay based pottery fired to a temperature of 1200 degrees celsius. The ewer can be traced back to two prominent factories in Staffordshire in England, one being called Ridgway and the other Samuel Alcoch.

The ewer has two different images, the front face depicts a boy reading to a girl from a book, presumably love sonnets. The back design depicts an older couple, this time the male is helping the lady spin wool. Encircling this is a filigree of Tudor roses that we have used in our label designs.

Our label designs have won gold and silver in the Printing Industries Craftsmanship Awards (PICA) in 1995 and 2000.
